Kahula Farms is located on the Big Island of Hawaii on the western slopes of Mauna Loa overlooking Kealakekua Bay and the blue Pacific Ocean. Warm trade winds and rich volcanic soil combine with afternoon showers to produce the distinct taste and mouth-watering aroma of our Kona Coffee.
In the cool morning the scent of yellow ginger flowers wafts in the window. The roosters are crowing and the farm cats are quietly meditating on the lanai waiting for breakfast. Long ago this beautiful land grew taro and since the 1920’s Kona typica coffee. Tended today with great love and care, these trees still produce beautiful beans and delicious Kona coffee.
Kahula Farms has 5 acres of coffee and macadamia nuts. We do not use any herbicides or pesticides on the farm. Our 2 acre citrus orchard is currently in transition to organic certification. The tangelos, grapefruit and Tahitian lime ripen during the winter months just as the coffee harvest is coming to a close. It will soon include figs and other edible tropical fruits for sustainability. Sprinkled around the farm are many food and utility plants such as macadamia nut, orange, tangerine, rangpur lime, avocado, mango, guava, Surinam cherry, banana, coconut, papaya, taro, wi apple, hala and bamboo.
Farm work ends with a beautiful red sunset over the blue ocean or perhaps a nourishing rain shower. At night we see both the North Star and the Southern Cross. These far away lights in the night sky remind us that guidance is always available as we navigate the planet we call home. They connect us to our ancestors who were also guided by these same lights for countless generations. We are honored to be the caretakers of this wonderful farm on the tropical island of Hawaii that is our home.
